Opening Pandora's Music Box

I know I might be really behind on this, but if you haven't heard of pandora.com, it's about time you were told! Type in your favorite songs and artists and it comes up with related songs with a custom radio station for you. You can give songs thumbs up or down and rate them to customize the station. I am currently listening to a Jason Mraz station and it has John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Matt Nathanson... my favorite male voices! Husky, clever lyrics, dreamy at times... so amazing. It's like lying in Alumni Park basking in the Malibu sun :)

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and will have a Happy New Year. Let the sparkling cider flow and your dreams soar! Wishing that all of your new resolutions will be new lifestyles for the better.

Starting Over

I had a habit of deleting blogs. And I was thinking about what I want to do with this radio show. I don't know. I was thinking about whether it really has a purpose and I realized that it was another snagged opportunity. Radio was easy to get involved in and it was a why-not entree that I piled onto my plate.

So why not keep it going? I know all the reasons. It's easier not to do it. The listeners are few. Do I really have something to say?

But I was stumbling around cyberspace as I always do, from something that led me to gizmos (a website revealing the latest whimsical gadgets and commentary about them) that led me to yankodesign.com (a website that compiles designs, whether actualized or not, and adds narrative explaining them) that led me to pan-dan.blogspot.com (a blog with pictures of designs, sort of like the sartorialist, but not limited to clothes), where there was a post with the following picture:

Let's assume that mistakes include any action taken that doesn't turn out quite the way you want it to. You took the action. It was a miss. It was a mistake.

Was K Squared Radio a mistake? Maybe not, if I keep morphing it from advice segments, to news, to a dose of insanity, which is what I did. It does feel very compass-less. Very insane.

So maybe it was. Maybe not.

But next semester, it will keep going. After all, I didn't buy thirty blank CD's for nothing. And as always, K Squared Radio is here for you. Whatever problems you have or advice questions, silly or serious, email to ksquaredradio@gmail.com. And remember, mistakes lead to discovery. So take a chance.

Michel Foucault on Insanity

Ever have those times where you're studying something and having the words just wash through your brain when all of a sudden SNAP! You just realized what you were reading? Well I just realized that I was reading about insanity after having obsessed about the new theme for K Squared Radio: A Dose of Insanity.

Michel Foucault is a French theorist *honhonhon* who "found that the defnition of what constitutes insanity and what to do about it have changed dramatically over time. People with power drew arbitrary lines between the normal and the abnormal and these destintions became discursive formations [the processes by which unquestioned and seemingly natural ways of interpreting the world become ideologies] that had real, physical effects on those deemed to belong to each group. Over time these unquestioned and seemingly natural ways of interpreting the world became ideologies, which then perpetuated themselves through further discourse [the combination of communication and culture]. The right to make meaning can literally be the power to make others crazy" (Griffin 338).

So basically, if you listen to me, I can define insanity however I want. SO... MUCH... POWER!!!11oneoneone!! But manipulation isn't the point of this radio show. If it were, people might start to catch on and stop listening and if a radio show is broadcasted in a forest of media technologies and no one is there to here it, does it really make a sound?

K Squared Radio is meant to be something interesting that will gather groups of people around a radio or dorm TV to hang out and listen to. It's supposed to spark conversation and inspire you to see the insane, quirky, krazy, and weird in the everyday. It's something to listen to when you do your homework. It's not meant to be jarring or unsettling... unless you want it to be. And it's here for you on the Internet, to accomodate your busy schedules. And it should be for you. Want to help define insanity? Email ksquaredradio@gmail.com with an idea for a theme and let me know when you're available to come in studio. Then we'll talk. We'll talk krazy.

Easy Peasy Japanesey

Ok, so listening to the K^2 radio show using an embedded music player has nothing to do with peas or being Japanese, but it is no longer a hassle to listen to it online! Woohoo! Believe me, I gave this subject much agonizing scrutiny and thought. The system-- the most recent show goes at the top of the blog while the older shows sit on top of the related posts or get pushed to the very bottom of the blog, under the posts.

The most recent show was A Dose of Insanity, the theme for the rest of the shows. Of course there are varying degrees of insanity so I'll just keep you guessing for the rest of the shows. Next show, though, is going to be Californians versus Texans! Take the poll on the right-- which do you like better? A Dose of Insanity is unfortunately not a full recording, so you missed the story about how Oprah invited a random guy named Sam Perry, a consultant to talk with on her show. Random? Very. He was a stranger she leaned on when Obama gave his... what do you call it? Acceptance speech? Basically, she ran out of people to talk to so she invited her shoulder guy. On the show that I talked about this, I was almost about to go it alone, which is better than inviting random shoulder people, but alas, my friends came to my rescue and were amazing guests. A shout out to Jaxelplax for letting me know that my shows have been getting better and that this one was the best so far. Good job guests Marie Diodara and Roxy! Thanks again, Shawn for showing up... like you do every time. You are AWESOME.

The show before that was Fail Night. The night itself was sort of a fail... very appropriate... since the phones were silent! Still have to work it out, but I worked out embedded music players, so with the help of God, the phones will one day work, as well. I'm positive. Like a proton. Thank you Myaverick, LC, Joe's F, and Shawn for helping me get through it.

Anyway, the show before that, the premiere, was sheer craziness! Sarah Scott, my number one fan and Jordan would know. They tuned in. Unfortunately, it did not get recorded, but that unrecording fail inspired the next night, which was Fail Night, so it was all good in the end. So you never know what you might miss if you don't tune in!
